Award-winning Guide to Autumn Beer

Tuesday, February 26, 2019

The days are getting shorter and the opportunity to crack open a cold beer on a long warm summer’s evening is disappearing, but don’t despair, gather your friends, pull up some chairs and circle around the bonfire and rejoice, for beer-drinking season is still upon us.

Autumn is the perfect time to enjoy craft beer, as it lends itself best to beers that aren’t too fruity or hoppy. Take this opportunity to enjoy beers that possess fuller body and maltier characteristics, and leave the classic pilsners and lagers for summer.

Here’s a perfect list of 5 Australian International Beer Awards (AIBA) gold medal-winning craft brews for you to try this Autumn.

Rye Fighter – Mountain Goat Beer
Double IPA - 7.8% ABV

For true lovers of IPA, the Rye Fighter from Mountain Goat is abundant in hops that really hits you in the face. As expected, there is a strong bitterness that is complimented with hints of spice and a touch of malt to round it off.

4 Pines Stout – 4 Pines Brewing Company
Stout - 5.1% ABV

A deliciously full body stout that presents hints of coffee, chocolate and caramel on the nose. Followed by a smooth finish and just enough bitterness to round out each satisfying gulp. Fun fact, this beer is also being tested to become the world’s first “space beer”.

Mack Daddy Dark Ale – Moon Dog Brewing
Dark Ale - 5.0% ABV

This beer from the crew at Moon Dog, has a beautiful deep brown colour and aromas of roasted coffee and a hint of fruit. On the tongue, notes of peach and melon is sandwiched between chocolate, roasted nuts and a hint of root beer.

Beerland Wheat Beer – Beerland Brewing
Wheat Beer - 4.8% ABV

This beer was crowned Champion Beer at the 2018 Australian International Beer Awards and upon tasting it we can see why! Inspired by traditional European wheat beer, the Beerland version displays hints of banana and clove, combined with a soft mouthfeel and low bitterness.

Two Birds Sunset – Two Birds Brewing
Amber Ale - 4.6% ABV

A full flavoured red ale is a complex blend of nine different malts, resulting in a rich, full bodied beer that has notes of pine, grapefruit and toffee. Versatile enough to pair with a wide range of food, and approachable enough for craft beer rookies.
