The best beer in Australia comes from a brewery tucked around the back of the Little Creatures Village in South Geelong. Many might walk straight on past the White Rabbit Barrel Hall and into the larger, louder Little Creatures Canteen, but taking out both Champion Australian Beer and Best Wheat Beer at the 2017 Australian International Beer Awards, this intriguing brewery is most definitely worth the visit.
White Rabbit started out in the leafy surrounds of Healesville, with imagination and a desire to be different at the forefront. Production soon swelled and the brewers required more space to allow the White Rabbit brand to grow, so they packed up and moved to Geelong - a move that has clearly paid off.
With $10 pulled pork rolls for sale out the front, friendly and attentive bartenders, delicious share plates and huge fermenters visible from your table, there's no better place to hide amongst the rows of barrels and enjoy a pint of White Ale.
Refreshing and light, with hints of fruity, floral flavours, White Rabbit's trophy-winning White Ale is best paired with the fresher dishes on the menu such as the Harris Smokehouse Oak Cured Salmon and Heirloom Carrot Salad.
After polishing off your award-winning brew, take a wander and examine the barrels filled with ageing ales, peek inside the open fermenters and chat to staff - curiosity underlies the White Rabbit philosophy, so they are more than willing to answer questions... And will most likely prompt you to ask!
If you do take a short stroll around to the Little Creatures Canteen, we recommend the gold medal-winning Dog Days - Summer Beer or a refreshing Furphy which took home a bronze medal in 2017, both on tap. The menu includes woodfired pizzas and a variety of share plates.
So what are you waiting for? Hop to it and lose yourself in a flavoursome journey at White Rabbit Brewery.
