The Australian Food Awards (AFA) is Australia’s leading national food awards program run by The Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV), celebrating the best food producers across the country.
Over 360 producers are nervously waiting on the results of the 2018 Australian Food Awards. This year over 1,200 products entered across eight categories, to see who will become champion and ultimately Champion Australian Product.
The blind judging process spans a three week period, which sees products judged upon criteria specific to each category. Each product is judged out of 100 points based on taste, texture, aroma and appearance. Those deemed worthy are awarded with gold, silver and bronze medals based on their overall score.
Gold medallists go on to be judged to determine the ‘Best in Class’, ‘Category Champion’ and eventually the title of ‘Champion Australian Product’. To ensure products are judged at their peak, judging for fresh produce – garlic category has taken place in February, whilst olive oil and olives will be judged in August.
