How do you pick a good bottle of wine? Australia’s best wines have just been released as judged by the Royal Melbourne Wine Awards' expert judging panel. During five days in Melbourne, more than 3000 wines were blind sampled resulting in the unveiling of these seriously good wines.

Best Young Red Wine of the 2017 & 2018 vintages
The Wild Fig SGM by Bleasdale Vineyards, Langhorne Creek, SA
Pretty blue and purple fruits with florals and cinnamon and pepper spices. The palate has juicy acidity, chalky tannins and a persistent finish.

Best Young White Wine of the 2018 & 2019 Vintages
2018 Shaw + Smith M3 Chardonnay, Adelaide Hills, SA
Amazingly complex nose with citrus spice and plenty of complexity. Some smokiness shows through with a nice creamy mid palate and succulent core. Very concentrated and overall a very tight package with a long finish.

Best Pinot Noir
2017 Pressing Matters Pinor Noir, Aziz Melick, Tasmania
Lovely bright colour. A complex flinty nose with good spice purity and gamey notes. Riper red fruits, particularly currants, add to the mineral acid line and fine tannins. A complex wine with plenty of drive.

Rich purple in colour, with opulent plum fruits, black olive and peppery spice. Well balanced with good length and fine tannins.

Best Fortified
Morris Old Premium Rare Muscat, NV, Morris Wines, Rutherglen, Victoria
Lusciously sweet with raisin, treacle and toffee characters. Incredible viscosity with a persistent sticky date finish.

Best Single Vineyard
Handpicked Capella Vineyard 2017 Chardonnay, Handpicked Wines, Mornington Peninsula, VIC
Intense lemon and ripe citrus fruits with hints of struck match. Palate is fine and poised with a saline finish.

Super bright colour. A punchy citrus wine with slatey aromatics and nice chalky characteristics. This seamless wine has a very pure and long line with a lemon and lime textural palate.

Best Chardonnay
