Wildes Lane Garlic

Winter frosts, blazing summer heat a winning garlic recipe

Wildes Lane is an off-grid, 20 acre farmlet in the foothills of the Grampians national park in south-western Victoria, owned and operated by Anna King and David Herbert.

“We began growing garlic in 2010, with a focus from the outset on named garlic cultivars with superior culinary qualities,” said Anna.

The project gradually evolved into a boutique, commercial enterprise, with 16 garlic varieties under cultivation.

“We select for culinary magnificence, seasonal spread, storage quality, beauty, hardiness and yield – each bulb is carefully chosen with the strictest critical eye for quality.”

The Grampians region, with its serene, mountainous backdrop, experiences persistent winter frosts and blazing summer heat, which suits garlic well, bringing out complex depth and vibrant flavour.

Anna and David have a personal, ethical and commercial commitment to organic growing methods, minimal mechanisation, a small carbon footprint and strong promotion of biodiversity.

“We don’t aspire to large scale commercial production as this would compromise quality; we wish to preserve and promote the human skills required for producing the finest garlic,” said Anna.

The goal for Wildes Lane is to supply renowned restauranteurs, provedores and those who appreciate great food with quality ingredients.

The garlic, including their award-winning Spanish Roja, is available for purchase via the website or you can meet Anna and David at farmers markets in the Grampians region.
